Bruce’s Success Story

Home > Success Stories A Journey of Community, Culture & Conservation in Tanzania Bruce’s journey with Maggie’s Tour Company was designed to showcase a different side of Tanzania — one where travel connects visitors with local communities, traditional knowledge, environmental conservation, and authentic experiences. His experience combined community engagement with hands-on learning, local food, sustainable practices, coffee traditions, recycling initiatives, and wildlife exploration. A Warm Welcome to Tanzania Bruce was welcomed at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transferred to KIA, where he stayed at Researchers accommodation. From the beginning, the journey was designed to give him an opportunity to experience Tanzania beyond the traditional tourist route. Connecting with Amsha Amsha Dare Women’s Group On his second day, Bruce visited the Amsha Amsha Dare Women’s Group, a community initiative supported through Dare Women’s Foundation. Here, he spent meaningful time with local women and community members while learning about their work, creativity, and commitment to improving their livelihoods. One of the highlights was seeing how discarded plastic water bottles are transformed into useful products such as chairs. Through recycling, the group turns an environmental challenge into an opportunity while promoting conservation and community empowerment. Bruce also participated in preparing and sharing a traditional local meal with the women. Around the meal, they exchanged stories, discussed cultural differences, and learned from one another. Discovering Local Coffee Traditions The following day, Bruce visited Baraka Coffee, a locally owned family coffee operation. He learned about traditional coffee production and experienced the local methods used to process coffee. The visit provided a closer look at how coffee is produced within the community, from the farm to the final product. It was another opportunity to connect with local people and understand an important part of Tanzania’s agricultural heritage. Recycling & Conservation at Shanga Shangaa Bruce’s journey continued with a visit to Shanga Shangaa in Arusha, where he discovered another inspiring example of recycling and social enterprise. He learned how discarded glass bottles and other materials can be transformed into useful and creative products. The experience demonstrated how recycling can contribute to environmental conservation while creating opportunities for local communities. Arusha National Park The final stage of the experience took Bruce to Arusha National Park, where the focus shifted from community and conservation to Tanzania’s natural environment and wildlife. After experiencing how local communities are working to protect and benefit from their environment, exploring the park provided a natural conclusion to the journey. More Than a Tourist Experience Bruce’s journey demonstrated how travel can create meaningful connections between visitors, communities, culture, and conservation. From recycling plastic bottles with the Amsha Amsha women to sharing a local meal, learning traditional coffee-processing techniques, discovering glass recycling at Shanga Shangaa, and finally exploring Arusha National Park, each experience offered a different perspective on Tanzania. At Maggie’s Tour Company, we believe responsible tourism should allow travelers to experience Tanzania while also creating opportunities for local communities and supporting environmental awareness. Travel. Connect. Learn. Give Back. Your Tanzania journey can be more than a safari. It can be an opportunity to meet communities, understand local traditions, support conservation, and create memories with a lasting purpose. Megan & Alexa’s Northern Tanzania Camping Safari

Home > Success Stories Guests: Megan & AlexaDuration: 8 DaysTravel Dates: 27 June – 4 JulySafari Style: Camping SafariSpecial Occasion: Alexa’s 35th BirthdayDietary Requirement: Vegetarian – no meat; no other known allergies A Journey of Adventure, Wildlife & Celebration Megan and Alexa’s journey through Northern Tanzania was designed as an intimate camping safari combining wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, authentic local experiences, and a very special birthday celebration. Their route took them from the baobab landscapes of Tarangire and the shores of Lake Manyara to the endless plains of the Serengeti and the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Ngorongoro Highlands and Crater. With camping in carefully selected locations, the journey offered an opportunity to experience Tanzania’s wilderness at a closer and more authentic level. Day 1 – 27 June: Tarangire National Park & Mto wa Mbu The adventure began with a journey toward Tarangire National Park, one of Northern Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife destinations. Famous for its enormous baobab trees, seasonal rivers, open grasslands, and large elephant herds, Tarangire provided a spectacular introduction to the safari. The evening was spent camping at Jambo Camp or a similar accommodation in Mto wa Mbu, a lively community located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. The exact pick-up arrangements remained flexible and were to be confirmed according to the guests’ arrival plans. Day 2 – 28 June: Lake Manyara National Park & Birthday Celebration This was a particularly special day as Megan and Alexa celebrated Alexa’s 35th birthday. The day continued with an exploration of Lake Manyara National Park, a beautiful and diverse ecosystem featuring groundwater forests, open plains, and lakeshore habitats. The birthday celebration was planned to include a surprise cultural experience, with the possibility of bringing local traditional dancers to the camp in Mto wa Mbu. The celebration could also incorporate a special lunch in a scenic location, depending on logistics, weather, and the day’s activities. Rather than simply marking a birthday, the experience was designed to create a memorable celebration surrounded by Tanzanian culture, nature, music, and community. Overnight: Jambo Camp or similar. Day 3 – 29 June: Mto wa Mbu → Serengeti National Park The journey continued toward the legendary Serengeti National Park. The drive itself became part of the safari experience, with game viewing beginning as the group entered the park. Tanzania’s changing landscapes gradually gave way to the expansive grasslands and open plains for which the Serengeti is famous. The evening was spent camping within the park, allowing Megan and Alexa to experience the sounds and atmosphere of the African wilderness after sunset. Overnight: Camping in Serengeti National Park. Day 4 – 30 June: Full-Day Serengeti Safari A full day was dedicated to exploring the Serengeti. With no need to rush between destinations, Megan and Alexa had time to explore different areas of the park and observe its remarkable wildlife. Depending on conditions and wildlife movements, sightings could include lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, gazelles, cheetahs, leopards, and numerous bird species. The day offered the freedom to appreciate both the spectacular wildlife and the immense landscapes of the Serengeti. Overnight: Camping in Serengeti National Park. Day 5 – 1 July: Serengeti → Ngorongoro Highlands After a morning game drive, the safari continued toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. The route offered another opportunity for wildlife viewing while gradually transitioning from the Serengeti plains into the volcanic highlands. The group stayed at Simba A Campsite, strategically positioned in the Ngorongoro area. Spending the night in the highlands allowed the team to prepare for an early and well-timed visit to the Ngorongoro Crater the following day. The timing of the crater visit would be carefully considered based on factors such as weather, road conditions, and other conditions affecting the experience. Day 6 – 2 July: Ngorongoro Crater Exploration The day began with a descent into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, often celebrated as one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders. The crater’s fertile grasslands, lakes, wetlands, and surrounding volcanic landscapes support an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Megan and Alexa could encounter elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, hippos, lions, and a variety of bird species, with the possibility of seeing the endangered black rhinoceros. After exploring the crater, they continued toward Jambo Camp or a similar accommodation for the night. Day 7 – 3 July: Ngorongoro → Arusha After breakfast, Megan and Alexa began their journey back toward Arusha. The return journey provided time to reflect on the experiences of the previous days — from camping beneath the Serengeti skies to celebrating a birthday through Tanzanian culture and exploring the extraordinary Ngorongoro Crater. Upon arrival in Arusha, they would stay at the villa or a similar accommodation. Day 8 – 4 July: Arusha & Departure The final morning marked the conclusion of Megan and Alexa’s Tanzanian adventure. They were scheduled to be ready at 8:00 AM, allowing sufficient time for their onward arrangements and departure. A Birthday to Remember Megan and Alexa’s safari was more than a journey through Tanzania’s famous national parks. It was a celebration of friendship, adventure, nature, and a milestone birthday. From the Great Rift Valley and Tarangire to the wildlife-rich Serengeti and the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, every destination offered something different. The combination of camping, wildlife viewing, cultural experiences, and a personalized birthday celebration created a journey designed around the travelers rather than simply following a standard safari schedule. From Volunteering to Safari: Anna’s Transformational Journey in Tanzania

Home > Success Stories A Journey of Community, Conservation, Culture & Wildlife Anna’s journey with Maggie’s Tour Company was designed to be more than a traditional holiday. Her experience began with volunteering and meaningful community engagement, followed by a safari through some of Northern Tanzania’s most remarkable landscapes. It was a journey that brought together people, culture, conservation, wildlife, and responsible tourism — demonstrating how travel can create meaningful connections while contributing to the communities visited. A Warm Welcome to Tanzania Anna’s experience began in the Kilimanjaro Region, where she was welcomed at Panama Hotel in Moshi before continuing toward the Arusha area. Rather than simply arriving as a visitor, Anna was welcomed into the local community. She spent time with families, greeted community members, helped with everyday activities, and experienced the warmth and hospitality of Tanzanian family life. These simple moments provided her with an authentic introduction to Tanzania — one based on people and relationships rather than sightseeing alone. Discovering the Amsha Amsha Dare Women’s Group One of the most meaningful parts of Anna’s volunteer experience was her visit to the Amsha Amsha Dare Women’s Group, a community initiative operating under Dare Women’s Foundation. Dare Women’s Foundation works directly with local communities to empower women and children through education, entrepreneurship, conservation, and community support. At Amsha Amsha, Anna spent time with women, girls, children, and members of the wider community. She came not only to learn, but also to share some of her own knowledge and experiences. She even spent time introducing the children to basic camera skills, creating a fun opportunity for learning and exchange. Turning Waste into Opportunity A particularly memorable part of Anna’s experience was seeing how the women transform discarded plastic water bottles into useful products, including chairs. What might otherwise become environmental waste is given a new purpose through creativity, practical skills, and teamwork. Anna also learned how the women create beautiful handmade products such as: Beaded necklaces and chains Bracelets Earrings Other handmade crafts The experience demonstrated how environmental conservation can be connected with entrepreneurship and income generation. The Strength of Women Working Together Perhaps the greatest lesson Anna took from Amsha Amsha was the power of unity and collective effort. She witnessed how women support one another, share skills, develop small businesses, and work together to improve their families and communities. For Anna, this was not simply a visit to a community project. It was an opportunity to understand how local women are creating pathways toward greater economic independence through cooperation and determination. Food, Dance & Cultural Exchange Anna was also welcomed into the cultural life of the community. She enjoyed traditional Tanzanian food, learned about local traditions, and participated in traditional dancing. Rather than observing from the sidelines, she joined the community and became part of the experience. These shared moments created an atmosphere of friendship, laughter, cultural exchange, and mutual learning. From Arusha to the Great Rift Valley Following her volunteer experience, Anna continued her journey toward the Great Rift Valley, traveling into the highland areas of Karatu District. She visited Gekrum Tlambo Village, home to the Iraqw, a people belonging to the Cushitic linguistic group. Here, Anna discovered another dimension of Tanzanian culture and community life. Her experience provided an opportunity to learn about local traditions, skills, and ways of living that have been passed down through generations. Traditional Skills & Sustainable Craftsmanship In Gekrum Tlambo, Anna had the opportunity to learn traditional techniques for transforming natural plant materials into useful household products. She learned how fibers from the mkatani plant can be processed into rope, which can then be used in making products such as mats, baskets, and other traditional crafts. The experience offered a fascinating insight into local knowledge and sustainable craftsmanship — demonstrating how communities can make practical use of natural resources while preserving traditional skills. Our Partnership with Dare Women’s Foundation Anna’s experience also represents an important part of the relationship between Maggie’s Tour Company and Dare Women’s Foundation. Our collaboration is built around a shared belief that tourism can contribute positively to local communities. Through our tourism activities and community experiences, we create opportunities for travelers to meet local people, learn from their experiences, and contribute to community-based initiatives. A small percentage of the profits generated through our tourism activities is directed toward supporting Dare Women’s Foundation and its community initiatives. This means that a safari with Maggie’s Tour Company can become part of something larger — helping connect tourism with community development, conservation, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods. Dare Women’s Foundation also works with community groups to support women through entrepreneurship, conservation, education, and access to opportunities. From Volunteer to Safari Traveler After completing her volunteer experience, Anna continued her Tanzanian adventure with a safari alongside Nalini. Together, they explored some of Northern Tanzania’s most iconic destinations. 28 June — Arusha Anna and Nalini began their safari experience in Arusha, staying at Under the Shade. After their time connecting with the community, they were ready to experience another side of Tanzania — its extraordinary wildlife and landscapes. 29 June — Tarangire National Park Their journey continued to Tarangire National Park, famous for its spectacular baobab trees, open savannahs, seasonal rivers, and large elephant populations. They spent the night at Ngorongoro Farm Lodge, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Ngorongoro highlands. 30 June — Serengeti National Park The safari continued into the legendary Serengeti National Park, where endless plains and abundant wildlife created a completely different experience from the communities Anna had visited earlier. The group stayed at Tanzania Bush Tented Lodge, providing an opportunity to experience the natural environment while remaining close to the Serengeti wilderness. 1 July — Serengeti National Park A second day in the Serengeti allowed Anna and Nalini more time to explore the park and appreciate its extraordinary wildlife and landscapes. The extended stay gave them the opportunity to experience the Serengeti at a more relaxed pace rather than simply passing through. 2 July — Ngorongoro

Strong Women Bridging Continents – by Makayla Simmer

Strong Women Bridging Continents – by Makayla Simmer. The most significant work I have done on my project this week is talking with Maggie Duncan Simbeye. She is a stakeholder of mine who is located in Tanzania. Maggie holds many different roles all of which she does VERY amazingly! She is the founder and director of Dare Women’s Foundation, an NGO working to empower and support women in alleviating poverty, economic empowerment, gender equality, and social justice issues. Maggie is also a guide for Dorobo Safari Company who Lewis & Clark works with. In this position she is our on site coordinator and supports the cross cultural engagement on the abroad program. WOW all of these things don’t even equal how amazing she is! In our talk I asked her what it meant to her to have these study abroad programs come to Tanzania, she talked about the importance of sharing and engaging cultures. This is a beneficial action for both sides, she talks about the experiences local tribes have interacting with students and how it is some of their only interaction with American culture giving them a great opportunity. She also talked about the experience abroad students have when engaging with another culture and how it is an opportunity to reflect on our privilege and learn from a different culture. She shares with me her main four pillars of life, love, gratitude, abundance, and compassion. These are things that she brings into her work and as she facilitates these cross cultural engagements. In answering the question of what she sees our students bringing out of a study abroad, while still answering what it means to have study abroad programs come to Tanzania Maggie talked about the perspective students gain and how when they go back to the US they are ambassadors. This is an oppertunity for students to “learn the reality of Africa” and then go back and share this. It challenges everything we learn in books, because books are not written by the people of Africa. By knowing the truth you are able to help. She describes how when most people think of Africa they think of the whole continent and this distances them, giving them the ability to do whatever they want to Africa. When people want to help they throw money at Africa, but this doesn’t help, the money funnels into the government and just a couple of people. She emphasizes “before you support a foreign place know what they need, because they know what they need, don’t just tell us about what to do.”  Engaging with the culture and learning from them, students abroad learn about where and why to support. The study abroad program brings money to local communities, and except for going to a few National Parks, all of the money goes back to the people, students also become aware of products local communities are making, such as soap, and can help the local communities by buying this soap. Maggie through all of what she said expressed a very powerful message, that what we are doing is not for ourselves it is for the world; “you are privilege for the world, you are not going to school for you, you are going to school for the world” and “don’t do this for yourself only, this is for the world. It is not easy, but it is amazing if you know what you are doing.” She is saying here that all the work we are doing has larger implications and has a greater effect then just on us, but we are learning in order to support global dynamics. This is a powerful message to hear and will be an even more powerful message to experience. Through my engagement in this project I am becoming aware and learning so many things, lessons that come from studying abroad. I am able to hear these things and understand them and I want to incorporate them into my life, but the effect of experiencing and living them while abroad I have a feeling will be even more influential in my implementation of them into my life.
