COVID-19 in Tanzania: Travel Update for Safari Guests

Home > COVID-19

As global travel resumes, Tanzania continues to welcome international visitors with relaxed and traveler-friendly COVID-19 protocols. The government has implemented safety measures that strike a balance between protecting public health and offering a seamless travel experience. With wide-open landscapes, remote lodges, and low population densities in safari destinations, Tanzania remains one of the safest and most rewarding places to visit post-pandemic.

Entry Policy into Tanzania

1. Fully Vaccinated Travellers
  • No testing required.
  • Must present a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate with a QR code (completed at least 14 days before arrival).
  • Complete the Traveller’s Health Surveillance Form online before arrival.
2. Unvaccinated or Partially Vaccinated Travellers
  • Must present a negative RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival, with a QR code.
  • Alternatively, undergo a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) at the point of entry (approx. USD 10).
  • If the rapid test is positive, a confirmatory RT-PCR test will be required (at the traveller’s cost).
3. Children Under 5
  • Exempt from all testing and vaccination requirements.

Health Screening on Arrival

  • All passengers undergo temperature and symptom screening.
  • Random rapid testing may be conducted, especially for those showing symptoms.
  • Health officers are present at all entry points for immediate assistance.

In-Country Measures

Tanzania’s national parks and travel infrastructure remain open and operational with standard COVID-19 precautions:

  • Face masks recommended in indoor or crowded public spaces.
  • Hand sanitizers and hand-washing stations are available in lodges, airports, and vehicles.
  • Social distancing is encouraged in public settings, though it is naturally easy to maintain on safari.

Safari vehicles and accommodations used by Maggie’s Tour Company are regularly sanitized, and all staff are trained in health and safety protocols to ensure a worry-free experience.

COVID-19 Testing for Departure

Tanzania does not require COVID-19 testing for outbound travellers, but:

  • Your airline or home country may require a negative COVID-19 test before departure.

  • PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests are available in major towns and popular safari areas:

    • PCR Test: Approx. USD 50–80

    • Rapid Antigen Test: Approx. USD 10–25

Our team can assist in organizing testing appointments and transport to the testing facilities if needed.
